Search for the new Tarab Lama Incarnation
by Norbu Wangchuk, Director, Tarab Ling
Earlier, the representatives of Tarab Institute Denmark and Tarab Institute International group as well as the Kongpo Khangtsen of Drepung Loseling Monastery University – where Tarab Rinpoche's seat is – met together during the Kalachakra initiation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in South India, Jan, 2006. They discussed in details the procedures of finding the reincarnation of late Tarab Tulku. They agreed to consult His Holiness regarding it and to follow the steps guided by His Holiness.
The procedures of finding the right reincarnation will involve three steps:
1) A committee consisting of members from Tarab Institute Denmark, Tarab Institute International and Kongpo Khangtsen of Drepung University has been formed. An application has been sent to His Holiness the Dalai Lama by end of April, 2007, under the name of Tarab Institute International and on the letterhead of Kongpo Khangtsen. This signifies the unity between the two organizations in the task of finding the reincarnation. The application is written in the manner in which Tarab Institute International will be the main body and Konpo Khangtsen will provide every assistant and help. An audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at this stage may not be necessary.
In reply to the application, His Holiness will provide a clear picture of the reincarnation as to:
A) Age of the child,
B) His animal year,
C) Directions / place etc. and
D) Possibly appointment of a head of
the search committee.
2) The search for such a child will begin under the appointed head of the search committee but strictly following the guidance of His Holiness. It may require many travels. The search committee will then gather names of about 3 - 4 possible reincarnations and then in the end go to Dharamsala for His Holiness's final decision. During this time an audience with His Holiness may be required.
3) Once His Holiness has selected the incarnation among the children presented, the child may be taken to His Holiness for ordination. During this time teachers, family members and search committee can ask for audience with His Holiness.
Note: The above mentioned steps are how it should work, but it may vary and things might change according to the needs.
I have been writing these lines based on discussion and confirmation with Geshe Chögyal, Kongpo Kangtsen, Loseling, Drepung.
Geshe Chögyal also informs that he is training a small monk to be the servant for the new Tarab Tulku to come.
Geshe Chögyal, who was the assistant of the former Tarab Rinpoche in Tibet at Drepung, has also promised to come and stay at Tarab Ling to take care of and help with finding the right tutors the new Tulku etc. to the best of his abilities. The plan is that the new Tarab Tulku should stay in Tarab Ling, Dehradun until the 6. year, whereupon the child has to resume the traditional higher studies at Drepung University Monastery.
