Module I. U.D. Science of Mind and Phenomena
The knowledge of the functioning of the human mind, which is normally called 'psychology' in the West and 'science of mind' (Tib.: Sems-rig) in the Tibetan tradition, is inseparably connected with its philosophical base, the investigation into phenomena. And moreover, in the ancient tradition neither can be separated from each other - in all the four main Buddhist Schools (Gelug, Kagyu, Nyingma, Sakya), which are being drawn upon here, both are being viewed together. U.D. Science of mind and phenomena examines questions such as "By which mental tools does one's experience of reality come about?" "What is the relationship between one's own experience of reality and 'real' reality?" and "Which types of mind are involved in the dynamics of experiencing and in reinforcing positive as well as negative reality experiences of self and other?" Here also it is not about an abstract understanding of the mind's functioning, but a means by which this functioning can be understood within the personal experience of one's own mind.
