Tso Pema is the Tibetan name and means the Lotus Lake. The indian name is Rewalsar. It is situated in the Himachal Pradesh province of India in about 1200m height of altitude. The nearest larger town is Mandi at a 25km distance. On the main road is an indian bazar were it is possible to find daily nessesities. People are very mellow and friendly.
In Dec.-Jan. the temperature is about +23º day +6º celcius at night. In this season mostly the weather is clear and it is possible to see the surrounding Himalayan snowy mountains.
Tso Pema is a very quiet pilgrim place for Tibetan buddhist as well as hindues and Siks. In the wintertime it is mostly Himalayan buddhists who visit the place. Around the lake are four Tibetan buddhist temples and the newest attraction, an enormeous Guru Rinpoche statue, which is just about to be completed. In the mountain above is a cave community with meditators as well as the ancient Padmasambhava caves.
How to arrive from Delhi:
There is a bus to Mandi from Kashmiri Gate busstand, it is called the 'Menali bus' quite comfortable, it should be booked at Kashmiri Gate busstand (near the tibetan camp), about 800rs. (It can also be booked at the travel-agency in the tibetan camp, mahayanatravels@yahoo.com). it arrives at 4 o'clock in the morning in Mandi. From there 25km. with taxi to Tso Pema about 350Rs. The more comfortable way is by taxi, about 12 hours from Delhi cost ca. 5000Rs. It is a very beautiful drive.
