Main teaching and study building - Painting by Architect Morten Rolighed, May 2006

Tarab Ling - New building project in India
A place for retreat and study of ancient inner science

Tarabling Refuge will be built in a traditional Himalayan style with slate roofs and white washed stonewalls. The buildings are to be built with local materials when available, such as stones from the riverbed, slate from the mountains and from wood locally. Although we would like to build completely in a traditional manner, some building components will have to be reinforced concrete such as foundations, pillars and slabs due to the risk of earthquake. The present trees that adorn the land will be incorporated in the garden layout. Water supply will be supplemented with water harvesting. Solar panels will be installed for hot water supply in order to decrease the need for electric power and to save on the running costs. Sewage and waist will be treaded in an organic manner for protection of the environment and for recycling.

    • The main building is a 665 m2, 3 storied building with a 200 m2 assemblyand teaching hall on the ground floor. On the first floor you will find separate teaching rooms, a library and offices. At the 2. floor there will be a small flat normaly used as a room for meditation and contemplation.

    • A 650 m2, housing facility for long-term students and scholars. This building is formed along an existing crescent of trees as a circular two storied building with 20 rooms and a central court yard.

    • Three 240 m2 two storied guesthouses, each with 8 separate small studio flats, and each equipped with a bathroom. Each room will either have access to the garden or to a small balcony.

    • A 260 m2 two storied house with 3 flats to accommodate the teachers. On the ground floor there are to be two small flats with a common kitchen. On the first floor there is to be one flat with a conference room giving on to a balcony.

    • The existing 200 m2 farmhouse will be rebuilt with kitchen facilities at the ground level, and a dining area upstairs with a fireplace and with access to a balcony.
